Adding Basement Insulation Will Reduce Energy Costs

Basement finishing has become a popular home improvement by families that want to create more living space in their homes. It is what basement designers call “free space” since all of the structural elements are already in place.

Besides the attraction of adding a fun new recreation room, an entertaining family media centre, home office, work-out space or basement apartment; whatever the family’s needs are, insulating the basement walls and floors is a practical part of the basement design that pays off.

By incorporating basement insulation into the walls as mandated by building codes, but also in basement Subfloor systems, homeowners can save up to 9% of their annual heating costs as indicated in the chart below for their basement finishing.

The estimated combined energy savings for Canadian basements range from $1,000 to over $1,400 annually. There would be comparable savings for United States basement markets.

The cost of adding an insulated Subfloor, such as the BARRICADE™ modular Subfloor panel by OvrX, is approximately $1,680 or $1.50 per square foot, when installed by the homeowner, for the 1,120 square foot basement used in this example The approximate payback from the energy savings for this insulating Subfloor investment ranges from 2.6 to 3.7 years.

When it is time to consider basement finishing ideas remember to include an insulating Subfloor because it makes sense financially and you will enjoy a warm, comfortable basement living space.
